Siddharha Gautama was a prince born in royal household in northern India. He had all the luxuries in life that he wanted. But one day he renounced this way of living and started wandering in search of illumination, for many years he followed different ways, starvation, meditation asceticism until one day sitting under a Bodhi tree in the city of Bothgaya he attaindes Mokhsa and became Buddha, the enlightend one.
The stroy of Siddharta became very well known in the western world after Herman Hesse wrote his famous novel „Siddharta“ in 1922. He later won the nobel price for literature. And in the sixties he was rediscovered and became the idol of the flower children, every hippy from San Franscisco to Amsterdam carried a copy and is was for many a great stimulus to go east to the mystic India.
My painting depicts disciples or sannyasins of Buddha in a monastery somewhere in India.
